Fiona Apple – Criminal
I’ve been a bad bad girl
I’ve been careless with a delicate man
And it’s a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don’t you tell me to deny it
I’ve done wrong and I want to
Suffer for my sins
I’ve come to you ’cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don’t know where I can begin
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings the consequence
At hand
But I keep livin’ this day like
The next will never come
Oh help me but don’t tell me
To deny it
I’ve got to cleanse myself
Of all these lies till I’m good
Enough for him
I’ve got a lot to lose and I’m
Bettin’ high
So I’m beggin’ you before it ends
Just tell me where to begin
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
Let me know the way
Before there’s hell to pay
Give me room to lay the law and let me go
I’ve got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say
The devil wants to know
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
What I need is a good defense
‘Cause I’m feelin’ like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I’ve sinned against
Because he’s all I ever knew of love
Fiona Apple was facing 10 years in jail for having a minuscule amount of marijuana and hashish on her tour bus. She was stopped in Texas, in a county famous for harassing famous stoners (probably because it’s way more fun and much safer to bother peaceful citizens than it is to mess with real criminals). Free Fiona! Free the Weed! Cannabis is a beneficial plant and whether you believe that medical marijuana is valid medicine or not, it’s surely just as valid as the myriad of toxic pills, potions, and foods that we can legally buy on the shelves of our local grocery stores and pharmacies. So many patriots claim to revere the freedom that the United States of America was supposedly founded on, and yet they support the prohibition of marijuana, which directly goes against those principles of freedom and justice for all. Why don’t they go stop some human traffickers or punish the pharmaceutical companies for all of the people they cause to become addicted to drugs or even kill each year? There are plenty of real criminals they could spend our tax dollars prosecuting, rather than persecuting the entertainers and troubadours and peaceful people?! The drug laws in our country are ridiculous. The only danger of using marijuana, is that the government might utterly destroy your life and steal all your belongings if they catch you using this harmless, beneficial plant. That is tyranny if ever I saw it… Here’s an article about our heroine’s arrest and what she was facing: http://www.alternet.org/fiona-apple-facing-10-years-jail-over-texas-marijuana-bust
